District Council To Support Rural Post Offices Threatened With Closure - Date of Release: 1 February 2008 Responding to the announcement of the latest proposed Post Office closures, the Leader of Chichester District Council has said the authority will support threatened outlets where possible. Councillor Myles Cullen, Leader of Chichester District Council, said: "I think it goes without saying that we do not want to see any post offices closing across the Chichester District, as they are an important part of our rural community and without them, many elderly people would struggle to access the services it provides.
"However, there is a sense of inevitability about closures, given the Government criteria and the experience of Kent residents where thousands of letters and e-mails failed to alter the number of Post Offices remaining on the closure list.
"The District Council will be doing all it can to support threatened post offices. Our Economic Development Service will work with outlets to look at ways in which they can diversify their businesses to make them financially viable. The Council will further look to develop a programme to support all rural businesses with help from Business Link.
"With our support, these outlets may be made viable without relying on the income of the Post Office, which could prevent them from disappearing from our villages altogether."

DCLG - Review of "Call-In" Directions: Consultation
This consultation paper fulfils the commitment given in the Planning White Paper published on 21 May 2007 to consult on measures intended to reduce Secretary of State involvement in casework. The proposed changes can be achieved without amending either primary or secondary legislation, as they take the form of directions contained within Departmental Circulars.
Proposals to enable most types of planning applications to be determined by local planning authorities except where the circumstances of any individual case justify its determination by the Secretary of State. C
omments are invited on the proposals described in the paper by 31 March 2008 and the link to the paper is below:

CE marking for construction products – forthcoming changes
The EU is about to announce proposed changes to the framework for CE marking for construction products (used in building and civil engineering works). CE marking demonstrates that a product has been tested in accordance with methods agreed by all the EU member states, and any product that carries a CE marking should be accepted in any member state without further testing.
Currently CE marking is voluntary in the UK for construction products. It is likely that the Commission’s proposals for a Regulation (replacing the Construction Products Directive) will make this mandatory. This means that many products that are marketed for use in construction works will need to carry a CE marking (if those works are covered by regulations such as Building Regulations).
The Department for Communities and Local Government is gathering views from small businesses on the changes. The greatest impacts are likely to be for product manufacturers, but distributors and importers may also be affected. If you are interested in taking part in a focus group in March or would like to provide views by email, please email construction.products@communities.gsi.gov.uk
For more information on the current framework for CE marking on construction products, see: http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/156006
Post Office closures - West Sussex - current consultation ends 10 March 2008
Details of post offices in West Sussex that have been earmarked for closure can be found on the Post Office website here: and in the attached Area Plan proposal.
Please note, that the decision to close Slindon Post Office, (earmarked for closure as part of the earlier consultation covering Sussex has been made. In making its decision, Post Office Ltd considers among other things the economic impact on communities, the proximity of alternative branches and the provision of public transport / local car ownership. In the case of Slindon, they have stated that there are two alternative branches within 2.5 miles, with parking close by. Both alternative branches have longer opening hours and a wider range of services. Both alternative branches also have level or ramp access for customers in wheelchairs.
